CHAPTER 10

KAUAI

The dock at the end of the ship’s exit ramp bustled with energy as passengers gathered for the morning’s included excursion, beginning with a scenic drive to Wailua, known as the “Land of the Kings.” Amidst the crowd, Adelle caught sight of Debbie and Tilly, armed with cell phone and notepad, diligently carrying out their assignment with enthusiasm.

“Looks like we’ve got a new pair of undercover agents on our team,” Adelle remarked to Barb, sharing a knowing chuckle. Together, they observed as Debbie, displaying the subtlety of the paparazzi at a celebrity gala, took photos of the group. Meanwhile Tilly furiously scribbled notes like a journalist hot on the trail of a breaking story.

From their vantage point, Adelle’s gaze shifted to Jerry and Julia. Jerry was wearing a Hawaiian shirt loud enough to compete with the ship’s horn. While he entertained a small audience with tales of his Hawaiian shopping adventures, Julia looked on, her expression a silent comedy of eyerolls and amused smirks.

Debbie nudged Tilly, directing her attention to Jerry. With a nod of agreement, they made their way over to him and his captive audience.

“Look at Tilly trying to blend in while eavesdropping,” Barb said, her lips twitching with amusement.

Tilly’s lack of subtlety was both endearing and comical. She sidled up to the group, nodding along to the conversation while jotting down notes in her notebook.

“What did you tell the Sherlock sisters?” Barb asked.

“I mentioned the possibility of someone on the included excursion wanting to contact Kevin,” Adelle replied. She had briefed the sisters on similar scenarios from past cruises. Initially feeling left out, they were quickly reassured by Adelle that they were now valued members of the team, with an important assignment to carry out.

Adelle couldn’t help but chuckle as she observed the sisters in action. “Should I text Debbie and tell her they’re barking up the wrong coconut tree?” she suggested to Barb, convinced that Jerry and Julia were simply harmless tourists.

“No, they obviously need the practice,” Barb replied with a smirk. “Come on. We need to get moving if we want to make it to Princeville before noon.”

As they gathered their things, Adelle stole one last glance at the sisters trailing behind Jerry and Julia onto the motor coach, heads close together in animated conversation. A warm wave of affection washed over her as she sensed their dedication to their roles, grateful that she had steered them clear of potential danger, at least for now.
